Your choir boy croon's jarringly misaligned Lascivious verse needs a growl and a grind Does that pelvis of glass stop you gyrating your hips Must you keep cool or risk melting your wax lips There's no resemblance, only imitation Baby smooth hands without a groove or a dent Don't suit your melody, so blue, crushed, and bent I peeked under your nails and guess what I found It ain't just topcoat-- that lacquer goes all the way down There's no resemblance, only imitation No resemblance. At your own invitation I found the fake, it doesn't matter I'm still laid out on a platter When you speak I still jump, "Yes, master" From a certain angle you pass for that beloved entertainer you mimic But from over here in the cheap seats I can see your sleeve loaded with gimicks Holding court from high atop a platform shoe Shameless climber smirks-- he's enjoying the view Buff them like apples to a dazzling shine Before they find out your fancy kicks are just vinyl There's no resemblance, only imitation No resemblance. At your own invitation I found the fake, it doesn't matter I'm still laid out on a platter When you speak I still jump, "Yes, master" There's no resemblance, only imitation There's no resemblance, only imitation There's no resemblance There's no resemblance There's no resemblance

I don't know anything about you Except Atlanta's from where you broadcast Can't say I'm really a fan of yours In fact my boyfriend thinks you're kind of an ass But you gave me one piece of wisdom I'll never forget Any time I need a reason to keep breathing I just think about what you said "Life is like a B-movie You don't want to leave in the middle But you don't want to see it again" Thank you, Ted Turner Thanks to you I walked a little bit further I won't say you're saving my immortal soul But you're keeping me here until the credits roll, so Thank you Ted Turner I have my doubts about this director I guess I'll wait around just to see I don't think this film'll get any better But it's not like I got somewhere to be All the lead performances are hammy though I better stick around case someone good might make a cameo Thank you Ted Turner

When I look back on that earnest adolescent Slogging in the country, a serf among peasants If she could see me now would she be surprised That I'm lord of the manor, would she envy or despise me Don't play the sucker's game Digging ain't how fortunes are made To get rich in a gold rush sell the spade If you're plumbing a house, I'm selling a wrench I got a shovel if you're digging a trench Headshots, lessons, pedals and effects Client referrals just twenty per cent I built a better mousetrap, watched it languish at the store But this pyramid invitation's got 'em beating down my door Sweat doesn't sell, naivety buys So set up shop pushing supplies Don't play the sucker's game Digging ain't how fortunes are made To get rich in a gold rush sell the spade Hey you driving for pennies, what a sap But you keep me in caviar because I wrote the app Does peddling hope make me parasitic I'm just a middle man now everyone's a critic Don't play the sucker's game Digging ain't how fortunes are made To get rich in a gold rush sell the spade Don't play the sucker's game Digging ain't how fortunes are made To get rich in a gold rush sell the spade

No Good Deed 02:37
You wouldn't rate a lookover I can get with any chick in this city But your sob story's got this pushover Giving you all his pity The view you flashed at me was purely "accidental" Just rolling off the couch where you had begged me for a nap All my mother's sons are perfectly gentle There's no defence against a girl who dives in your lap You can't help it I deserve all the blame I let you convince me you were gonna be cool I should have known that you're exactly the same as all the others who claimed it's all good fun then turned and cried I was cruel You knew where you stood from the get-go I said we're never gonna dance Now you're twisting my arm just to hear my falsetto Making me so so sorry I ever gave you a chance Cufflinks, cashmere, first editions I thought these things were gifts. This Pangloss never learns To see the strings pulling him into the worst positions All you ever wanted was somebody to burn You can't help it I deserve all the blame I let you convince me you were gonna be cool I should have known that you're exactly the same as all the others who claimed it's all good fun then turned and cried I was cruel

Waiting to be fooled in the chill April dusk Disciples testifying, scalpers testing their luck No idea I was gonna be baptised at the Gramercy Give me this day my daily carrot I'll spin your wheels, I'll cough up your collections Sedated in limbo, never daring to be something real To break this suspension A king professing sins, raining sweat upon the crowd In a visceral communion between the lost souls and the found Heaven sent or hell bent on a profane sacrament I keep the faith in low fidelity Since I was baptised at the Gramercy Since I was baptised at the Gramercy

about

Sylvie Yannello's debut EP _Treacle & Vitriol_ releases on 1 April 2021, the tenth anniversary of the first time she saw Elvis Costello in concert. (She has seen him a couple dozen times since.) "Baptised at the Gramercy" specifically commemorates that occasion. EC fans will find many nods to the man himself in "Gramercy," as well as in the EP's opening track "No Resemblance".

Sylvie occupies the piano position, backed up by top talent from NYC's blues scene, on this collection featuring tales of imposters, narcissists, con men, and unlikely saviours.
